There is an unwritten rule in the suburbs: Don’t mow your lawn before 9:00 AM.
Why? Because a standard gas lawn mower runs at about 95 dB. That is loud enough to wake up the entire block and cause permanent hearing damage after just 15 minutes of exposure.
If you want to mow early (to beat the heat) without becoming the neighborhood villain, you need to ditch the gas engine.
I tested the top electric mowers to see if they actually have enough power to cut thick grass without the roar.
1. The Heavyweight Champ: EGO Power+ 21-Inch
Best For: Replacing a Gas Mower
This is widely considered the “Tesla” of lawn mowers.
- The Power: It uses a massive 56V battery that cuts through tall, wet grass just as well as a gas engine.
- The Noise: It is significantly quieter than gas. It sounds like a large fan running, rather than an explosion.
- My Take: It’s pricey ($500+), but it folds up for storage and requires zero oil changes.
2. The Budget Pick: Greenworks 40V Cordless
Best For: Small Yards (Under 1/4 Acre)
If you have a small suburban lawn, you don’t need a beast.
- The Design: Lightweight plastic deck. It’s easy to push.
- The Sound: Very quiet. You can easily listen to a podcast while pushing this.
- The Price: Often under $300.
3. The “Smart” Pick: Ryobi 40V HP Brushless
Best For: People with Ryobi Tools
If you already own Ryobi drills or blowers, get this one to share the batteries.
- The Tech: Features “Gas-Like Power” with a whisper-quiet electric start.
- The Sound: It has a low hum. No high-pitched whining.
Buying Guide: Gas vs. Battery
Is there such a thing as a “Quiet Gas Mower”? No. Even the best gas engines (like Honda) are loud because they rely on internal combustion.
According to the CDC, gas mowers can cause hearing loss in less than 2 hours. If you refuse to switch to electric, you absolutely must wear hearing protection.

The “7:00 AM” Etiquette Rule The true test of a quiet mower isn’t the decibel rating on the box; it’s your neighbor’s reaction.
With the EGO Power+, I found that from 50 feet away (across the street), the sound blends in with the wind.
You can genuinely mow at sunrise without getting a noise complaint. You cannot say that about a gas Honda.
Conclusion
- Want the best performance? Get the EGO Power+.
- On a budget? Get the Greenworks.
- Have other Ryobi tools? Get the Ryobi.
